Here’s how Shubman Gill can break Sachin Tendulkar’s 1998 ODI record in 2023

Can Gill finish the year 2023 with a big revelation tonight? In this article we will talk about how.

Shubman Gill has been in stellar ODI form in 2023. The Indian opener has scored a century in every format this year. The 23-year-old has been unstoppable, especially in ODIs. Gill scored his 5th ODI century of 2023 on Sunday in IND vs AUS 2nd ODI. With 1230 Runs in 20 ODI matches this year, the young opener is inching closer towards Sachin Tendulkar’s long standing record of most ODI runs in a calendar year.

Let’s take a closer look at Gill’s dreamy start to the year and his chances of achieving the milestone.

Shubman Gill in ODIs in 2023:

70(60), 21(12), 116(97), 208(149), 40(53), 112(78), 20(31), 0(2), 37(49), 7(16), 34(49), 85(92), 10(32), 67(62), 58(52), 19(25), 121(133), 27*(19), 74(63), 104 (97).

In 1998, the ‘Master Blaster’ achieved a remarkable feat by scoring 1,894 ODI runs in a single year. Sachin smashed nine centuries and seven half-centuries during that year to set up a record.

Meanwhile, Gill so far has amassed 1230 runs in 20 ODI matches and is 665 runs away to break Sachin Tendulkar’s special feat of most runs in a calendar year.

India vs Australia – Remaining 1 match

World Cup: Minimum 9 matches

South Africa tour of India: 3 matches

Assuming Gill plays a maximum of 15 more ODIs this year, if India reaches the finals of the World Cup, he will need to score approx 49 runs per innings to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record.

While it still looks a tough task, there is a big advantage for Gill here as he will be playing in India. Given that he is an opener, Shubman Gill has a golden opportunity to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record.
