Shortly after India’s five-wicket win over Australia in the first ODI of the three-match series in Mohali on Friday, Ravichandran Ashwin engaged in batting practice at the wickets. Under KL Rahul, India successfully chased down the 277-run target with 8 balls to spare, securing a five-wicket win in the opening ODI match. Shubman Gill’s elegance and composure complemented Mohammed Shami’s top-class bowling, resulting in India taking a 1-0 lead in the three-game IND vs AUS ODI series. Notably, Ravichandran Ashwin made his return to ODI cricket after an 18-month absence, and he recorded figures of 1 for 47 in his 10-over spell.

In India’s five-wicket win, Ashwin didn’t have the chance to bat. However, the determined cricketer swiftly took to the middle to receive some throwdowns. Head coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathour closely monitored this practice session.
Ashwin’s World Cup Ambition
With only 15 days left until the World Cup, it’s no surprise that Ashwin is putting in every effort to secure his spot in the India squad. It’s worth noting that the squad can be adjusted until September 28. Following an economical bowling effort where he conceded 47 runs and took the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne in his 10 overs, the 37-year-old was eager to work on his batting.
This isn’t the first clear indication of Ravichandran Ashwin’s strong desire to bat. A day after India included him in the squad for the Australia ODIs, Ashwin participated in a local league match organized by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. He represented the Take Solution MRPA team and took to the crease, showcasing his unwavering dedication to the game.
While Rahul Dravid may not openly acknowledge that R. Ashwin is on trial, it’s clear that these three games serve as a significant litmus test for him. Axar Patel holds an advantage due to his strong batting and his ability to provide a like-to-like replacement for Ravindra Jadeja. Ashwin is likely to be among the reserves. However, with two matches remaining and Washington Sundar not being a prominent part of the World Cup plans, the experienced Ashwin could gain an edge in the selection process.
