Asian Games, India Wrap Sept 22: Men’s Volleyball team, Table Tennis teams clinch wins

On Day 4, India's Men's Table Tennis team defeats Yemen and SIngapore, Women won against Singapore. Indian Men's Volleyball team entered quarterfinal

On Day 4 of the Asian Games on Friday, September 22, Indian Men’s Volleyball team continued their win streak. The World o.73 side defeated Chinese Taipei in straight sets to enter the quarterfinal. In the Men’s Table Tennis, India Men defeated Yemen and Singapore. Women’s table tennis team won against Singapore. Meanwhile in Rowing Bajrang Panwar entered the final in SIngles sculls.

Asian Games – 22nd September India Results

Rowing

Indian rower Balraj Panwar qualified for Final A of the men’s single sculls at the Asian Games 2023 on Friday. The 24-year-old Panwar finished third with a timing of 7:22:22 in the semifinal F A/B2 to make the cut for the medal race. There are multiple finals in rowing. However, top three rowers in the Final A will win medals.

Table Tennis

Men’s Team event – India vs Yemen

Indian men’s table tennis team began its campaign on a winning note with a 3-0 victory over Yemen. Veteran Sharath Kamal, G Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai made short work of their Yemenese opponents to notch similar straight game victories.

Sathiyan set the ball rolling as he defeated Ali Omar Ahmed 11-3 11-2 11-6 in 14 minutes. The 41-year-old Sharath, playing his last Asian Games, then beat Ebrahim Abdulhakim Mohamm Gubran 11-3 11-4 11-6 to double India’s lead. The country’s top-ranked player Harmeet sealed the tie with an 11-1, 11-1, 11-7 win over Magd Ahmed Ali Aldhubhani.

Women’s Team event – India vs Singapore

The Indian women’s table tennis team started off their campaign with a hard-fought win over Singapore in their Group F match at the ongoing Asian Games at Hangzhou on Friday. India beat Singapore by 3-2.

In the first match of the tie, Ayhika Mukherjee took on Jian Zeng in women’s singles competition. Jian won the game by 3-1 (7-11, 11-2, 11-7, 12-10) to give Singapore a 1-0 lead. In the second match of the tie, Manika Batra took on Jingyi Zhou in another women’s singles match. Batra reversed the fortunes of Singapore, levelling the scoreline 1-1 with a 3-1 win over the Singaporean (11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-3).

Volleyball

After recording a stunning victory against a much higher-ranked South Korea, Indian Volleyball team defeated another higher-ranked opponent in Chinese Taipei in an hour and 25 minutes to progress to the 1-6th place playoffs.

India lagged 6-10 early on but Erin Varghese helped the side to reduce the gap to 11-13. After lagging for most part, India finally drew parity at 21-21 before Varghese and Ashwal Rai won the final two points to give India the lead.

In the next two sets India managed to maintain the lead from the start. In the second set, they led 3-0 initially. But Chinese Taipei managed to level the scores at 17-17. However, Indian moved ahead in the final moments with consecutive points to close the issue 25-22.

India made a positive start in the decider, leading 10-4 at one stage. Chinese Taipei managed to narrow it down to 10-12 before drawing level at 14-14. India, however, moved ahead to 21-18 before sealing it comfortably 25-21.
