Asian Games India Wrap, Sept 21: Women’s cricket team in semis, rowers inch closer to medals

On day three of the Asian Games, India had events lined up in men's and women's football, rowing, and women's cricket.

Day three of the Asian Games belonged to the Indian rowers, as they managed to make it to the finals of eight events, out of the 10 they competed in. Meanwhile, Balraj Panwar made it to the semis of men’s singles sculls and would be in contention to make it to the finals on Friday. Elsewhere, in football, it was a bitter-sweet day for India as the men’s team won their match against Bangladesh 1-0, but the women’s team lost to Chinese Taipei 1-2. In women’s cricket, the quarter-finals against Malaysia could not be completed, and India sailed into the semis.

Indian Rowers Step Closer to Medals

Featuring in the repechage round of the men’s quadruple sculls, the team of Satnam Singh, Parminder Singh, Jakar Khan, and Sukhmeet Singh finished with a timing of 6:09.94s and made it to the finals. Satnam Singh and Parminder Singh also made the finals through repechage with a timing of 6:48.06s. The Indian team that failed to make the finals was the women’s pair of Kiran and Anshika Bharti, in doubles lightweight sculls. The finals of the rowing events will take place on 24th and 25th September.

IND 1-0 BAN, IND 1-2 TPE

After being thrashed by hosts China 1-5, the Indian men’s football team made their chances of making it to the next round alive. They beat Bangladesh 1-0 and earned crucial three points in the ongoing Asian Games. Sunil Chhetri scored the only goal of the match from the penalty spot after Bryce Miranda was fouled inside the box late into the second half.

In another match, the Indian women’s football team lost their first encounter against Chinese Taipei 1-2. After Anju Tamang opened the scoring in the second half, Li-Chin Lai equalised in the 69th minute. Then after a defensive error by the Indians, Yu-Hsuan Su scored the winner for Chinese Taipei in the 84th minute.

In a rain-marred quarter-final against Malaysia, the Indian team did not even break a sweat to make it to the next round. After the match was reduced to 15 overs only, the Indian team posted a mammoth 173/2. In the absence of Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana scored a brisk 27 from 16 balls. Thereafter, Shafali Verma took over to score 67 from 39 balls, hitting five towering sixes. In the end, Richa Ghosh played a cameo of 21 from seven balls. The match was awarded to India, only after two balls were bowled in the Malaysian innings.
