Asian Games: All you need to know about mascots Chenchen, Congcong and Lianlian

The Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, which begin on September 23, have announced three official mascots.

It is a long-standing tradition to have a mascot for multi-nation events like the Asian Games, but this time around, China has gone ahead and announced three mascots for the Games. Chenchen, Congcong, and Lianlian are a group of robot mascots of the Hangzhou Asian Games, which represent the city’s cultural heritage. As per the official website, the trio together is called ‘Memories of Jiangnan’ and derives its name from a poem by Bai Juyi.

Asian Games Mascot Chenchen

As per the official website, Chenchen represents the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, which is also a World Heritage site. The mascot gets its name from the Gongchen Bridge, situated in the Hangzhou section of the Grand Canal. Chenchen joins the Grand Canal, the Qiantang River, and the world beyond the sea. Also, the blue colour represents science and technology.

Asian Games Mascot Congcong

Congcong represents the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, also a World Heritage site. The mascot gets its name from the Cong jade pendant. In a way, it signifies the 5,000-year-old Chinese civilisation. The yellow in Congcong comes from a great harvest. The mythical-beast facial pattern on the head is about the indomitable courage and self-transcendence.

Asian Games Mascot Lianlian

Just like the other two, Lianliam represents the West Lake, another World Heritage site. The mascot gets its name from the lush and full lotus leaves. There is a great importance of lotus leaves in China, as it is associated with purity, nobleness, and peace. The green in Lianlian signifies life. The lotus leaf on the head is about the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, in the West Lake.
