Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo will be absent from team’s recent fixture against Luxembourg on 12th September.
The Al Nassr player failed to get on the scoresheet in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Slovakia. Instead, he was shown a yellow card for a rash challenge on former Manchester United teammate for Martin Duvravka.
According to many, Ronaldo was lucky not to get a straight red card from referee Glenn Nyberg.
Ronaldo slid to try and reach ball, but Dubravka got there first and Ronaldo’s boot caught him in the face. He apologised to Dubravka soon after but many were left wondering why Ronaldo wasn’t sent off even after a VAR check. Despite the pain, Slovakia’s ‘keeper was able to see out the game.
Why is Ronaldo suspended?
Ronaldo will sit out of the match against as he picked up his third yellow card of the European Championship qualifying campaign. According to the rules, a player to receive three yellow cards in the qualifying matches will be suspended for a match.
Ronaldo will certainly be unhappy to miss out on a chance to play the Luxembourg match, a team he has enjoyed success against. CR7 has scored 11 goals in 11 outings against Luxembourg, making the nation one of his favourite teams to face. The last time Portugal faced Luxembourg, Martinez’s side beat them 6-0 with Ronaldo grabbing a brace.

Notably, Ronaldo’s scoring boots were not needed in Portugal’s recent win against Slovakia although he already has five goals in qualifying, which places him joint-fourth best alongside Harry Kane and Zeki Amdouni.
