Saudi Clubs in UEFA Champions League? Pro League director opens on wild card entry

Saudi Pro League director of football Michael Emenalo responded when asked if Saudi clubs could play in the UEFA Champions League.

UEFA recently cleared out they are not in the mood to give a wild card entry to Saudi clubs in the Champions League. Saudi Pro League wanted to feature in the UEFA competition from next season but UEFA denied this proposal insisting that this event is only for European teams. Now, the latest development is Saudi Pro League director of football, Michael Emenalo, has denied claims that they could push for a Champions League place in the future.

The whole story started last month when executives from the Saudi Pro League decided to submit a request to UEFA to participate in the Champions League. They were keen to place at least one side in the UEFA’s biggest club competition. Saudi Pro League wanted to see their league winners in the Champions League. They proposed this idea as a ‘wild card’ entry, but Emenalo has rubbished the claims.

While talking to talkSPORT, Emenalo said: “I don’t know where that’s come from. I think that’s someone taking a dreamy leap into a far-fetched future. I think our goal is to take quality baby steps and the first step is to stabilise our league, make it very entertaining for our fans and getting fans across the world to pay attention to what we’re doing.”

Emenalo is trying to make the Saudi Pro League better and take step by step in pursuit of the best version of the league. He wants to make their league so entertaining that fans from across the world talk about it and pay attention to Saudi top-flight. Saudi clubs were already on the radar of football experts during the summer transfer window.

Saudi clubs just changed the whole narrative of the transfer window by signing big names from Europe like Karim Benzema, Neymar, Riyad Mahrez and Jordan Henderson. It was the biggest summer window in favour of Saudi. Since the arrival of Ronaldo, the Saudi Pro League also gaine some popularity. Their summer window is shut down and clubs will focus on the league. This season would be important for a better future of the league.
