Virat Kohli posting his YoYo test score on Instagram a few days ago have stormed up a controversy. Many former cricketers have had their say on the topic with Sunil Gavaskar being the latest.
Kohli had shared his YoYo test score of 17.2 on his Instagram story during the lead-up to the Asia Cup while the Indian team was in the midst of a training camp in Bengaluru.
This BCCI authorities deemed the action a ‘breach of contract’ and issued instructions to the players, advising them against sharing confidential information with the public.
BCCI hits back at Virat Kohli?
News agency PTI however reported a day later that it was not Virat Kohli who achieved the highest score in the test. Shubman Gill trumphed Kohli with a score of 18.7 which was higher than the required score of 16.5. The report led many to wonder if Virat Kohli still is India’s fittest cricketer any more. It is imperative to note that the YoYo score takes various elements into consideration when assessing an athlete’s level of fitness.
Gavaskar weighed in on the matter and explained the reasons behind conducting the test on a global stage.
“There was a lot of excitement when Kohli put out his YoYo score which was more than the limit that the BCCI trainers had set. Shubman Gill posting an even better YoYo score than Virat Kohli was by no means one-upmanship. The age difference between the two mustn’t be forgotten and the elder has to be admired for his fitness standard. The BCCI then directed that nobody should post their YoYo test scores which might have actually saved some blushes for some,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

Indian cricket team is poised to play at least a couple of matches with their arch-rivals Pakistan over the course of the next couple of months in Asia Cup and the upcoming World Cup. The entire nation is looking forward to these fixtures and Gavaskar is no exception.
“As usual, it’s been hyped up as the best rivalry in the world in cricket. It certainly gets even the non-cricket followers in both countries also interested even if it’s just for the day, because of the history between the two countries but also the political mileage that can be derived out of it. The players over the years know that they will be made tools by those in both countries who really have no interest in the game but to promote their own agenda,” Gavaskar added.
