‘From Samson to Ashwin’ Five Big Misses in Indian squad for World Cup 2023

Team India on September 5 (Tuesday) announced its World Cup 2023 squad. The likes of Samson, Ashwin and Chahal among others did not made the cut.

Team India has announced its squad for the upcoming World Cup 2023. While most of the names deserved their spot in the Indian camp, some of the prominent names were also left out for the Marquee event. The likes of Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal were trending on social media after BCCI announced the 15-member squad for the World Cup. In this article, we will take a look at some of these players.

1. Yuzvendra Chahal

Chahal was a part of the Indian team in their recent tour to Caribbean in the five-match T20I series. His performance against the West Indies weren’t satisfying as the spinner managed to take only five wickets. Chahal has played just two ODIs in 2023 which also gives an indication he wasn’t in BCCI’s scheme of things for a long time. With Kuldeep Yadav performing consistently, it might be an end of road for Chahal in the international arena.

2. Ravichandran Ashwin

Senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was also ignored for the WC squad. To note, Ashwin was part of the Indian squad during the 2011 WC as he played a crucial role in India’s win over Australia during a knock-out match. Ashwin’s experience on the Indian slow pitches might have been handy for the Indian contingent. On the other hand, Ashwin also has the ability to stay at the crease. However, the Men in Blue have opted the spin trio Jadeja, Kuldeep and Axar.

3. Prasidh Krishna

Pacer Prasidh Krishna recently returned from injury as he represented India against Ireland in 20-over fixture. However, the right-arm pacer has not managed to impress the selectors to get his name on the World Cup list. The Karnataka-born pacer has the ability to swing and seam the new ball. However, he sometimes can be quite costly during the ending phase of an innings.

4. Sanju Samson

Another Rajasthan Royals player in the list, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson name was also not included in World Cup squad. To note, Samson averages more than 50 in the ODI format. His strike rate is also above 100. However, Ishan Kishan is currently in form of his life and with KL Rahul returning to the Indian contingent, it is was a tough ask to fit another wicket-keeper.

5. Arshdeep Singh

Team India do not have any left-arm pacers in their WC squad. Arshdeep Singh who has been a consistent performer for India in the white-ball format was shockingly left out of the Indian squad. The left-arm pacer has the wicket-taking abilities and bowls well in the death overs. Plus it would have also brought some variety in the pace line-up. It remains to be seen how the Indian pace line-up would fare in the marquee event.
