Novak Djokovic vs Bernabe Zapata Miralles

Novak Djokovic overcame some minor early issues to cruise past Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-4 6-1 6-1 in the second round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday, as he continues his hunt for a 24th Grand Slam title.

More accustomed to the bright lights of the New York night session, the Serbian star instead absorbed the muggy midday August heat, firing off 35 winners to set up a meeting with compatriot Laslo Djere in the third round.

Casper Ruud vs Zhang Zhizhen

The Chinese star survived a thrilling back-and-forth encounter, upsetting last year’s finalist Ruud 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 after three hours, 18 minutes. Zhang delivered an inspired performance, striking 59 winners to become the first Chinese man to earn a Top 5 win since the beginning of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings (1973).

Taylor Fritz vs Juan Pablo Varillas

Ninth seed Fritz was dialled-in Wednesday, wasting no time to down Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. The California native won 36 of 44 points behind his first serve and dictated play with his forehand to advance. Fritz showed great toughness in rallies when he needed to play defence and fended off three break points to remain unbroken this week.

“It feels really good to just come on court and take care of business like I did the last two matches,” Fritz said. “At Slams, it’s a bigger draw than all of the other events so it’s a lot more matches and the stakes are a lot higher, so you want it so much more. You get through some of these, play yourself [into] the tournament and you start feeling exactly the level you’re going to show up to play every day.”

Women’s Singles

Coco Gauff vs Mirra Andreeva

Coco Gauff triumphed over Mirra Andreeva in a battle of the young guns to reach the third round of the US Open with a commanding straight-sets win.

The sixth seed won 6-3 6-2 in 76 minutes to earn a clash with fellow American Danielle Collins or No. 32 seed Elise Mertens.

It was a commanding display that will do little to dampen the New York crowd’s hopes that Gauff could make a run for her maiden Grand Slam title.

Iga Swiatek vs Daria Saville

World number one Iga Swiatek moved into the third round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday but not without a fight, taming feisty Daria Saville, who had warned she had the game to make the defending champion uncomfortable.

After a 6-0 6-1 rout of Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson in her opening match, Swiatek did not look as at ease as she was made to work for a 6-3 6-4 win over the 322nd-ranked Australian spark plug.
