ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic regains Word No.1 ranking, set to retain top spot after US Open

Novak Djokovic reclaimed the top spot in the ATP Rankings following his victory in the first round at the US Open 2023. He is set to maintain his spot in the rankings even after the conclusion of the Grand Slam event.

Novak Djokovic has reclaimed the World No.1 spot in the ATP Rankings. The 23-time Grand Slam champion displaced Carlos Alcaraz from the top spot after his first round win in the US Open on Monday, 28th August. The Serbian is set to be the official World No.1 after the conclusion of this year’s US Open 2023.

Novak Djokovic missed the US Open last year. He was banned from entering the country due to his non-vaccination status against Covid-19. The three-time champion made his return to the Flushing Meadows in New York this year as the second seed. He was just 20 points behind Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Rankings.

Djokovic was expected to go past Alcaraz in the rankings after his first round win in the Grand Slam event. The Serbian, as expected, began his campaign in the tournament by sailing past Alexandre Muller 6-0, 6-2, 6-3. With the win he reclaimed the top spot in the rankings.

As per the ATP LIVE rankings at the moment, Novak Djokovic gained 45 points after the win and now has 9,840 ranking points. He is set to gain additional points after every win and will continue to stay at the top.

With Alcaraz being the defending champion, he can only defend his points in the tournament and cannot additionally gain any points even if he wins the title this year. Hence Djokovic is guaranteed to stay at the top even after the final grand slam event of the year concludes.

Novak Djokovic will next face Spain’s Bernabe Zapatta Miralles in the second round. Carlos Alcaraz meanwhile is set to begin his title defence in the Grand Slam event on Tuesday. He will face Dominik Koepfer in the opening round.
