Asian Games bound Aman Sehrawat, Sumit Malik qualify for World Wrestling Championships

Asian Games bound Aman Sehrawat and Sumit Malik made the cut to the World Championships squad after winning the selection trials.

World Wrestling Championships Trials: Asian Games bound Aman Sehrawat and Sumit Malik booked their sports in the World Wrestling Championships squad after winning the selection trials on Saturday, 26th August. As many as 10 wrestlers made the final cut to the big ticket event, which is scheduled to be held in Belgrade from September 16.

On Day 2 of the World Wrestling Championships selection trials in Patiala, Aman Sehrawat defeated Atish Todkar in the final. He will be representing Indian in the 57kg category. Meanwhile Sumit Malik emerged as the winner in the 125kg category.

Akash Dahiya will be representing India in the 61kg. While Anuj Kumar will be seen in action in the 65kg category. Anuj replaces Bajrang Punia, who had already decided to skip the world trials to train abroad for the Asian Games.

World championships silver medallist Deepak also skipped the trials in the 86kg category. In Deepak’s absence, Sandeep Singh got the better of Jonty Kumar to win the 86kg trial.

Elsewhere, Abhimanyu beat Mulayam Yadav to seal the world championships place in the 70kg, while Naveen defeated Sagar Jaglan to win the 74kg trials. In the 79kg men’s freestyle, Sachin More defeated Rohit Guliya to seal his ticket to Budapest.

Pruthviraj Patil won the 92kg category beating Gourav Baliyan, while Sahil clinched the 97kg spot defeating Vicky. Sumit Malik beat Akash Antil to win the 125kg freestyle spot.

World Wrestling Championships squad:

Freestyle: Aman Sehrawat (57kg), Akash Dahiya (61kg), Anuj Kumar (65kg), Abhimanyou (70kg), Naveen (74kg), Sachin More (79kg), Sandeep Singh (86kg), Pruthviraj Patil (92kg), Sahil (97kg), Sumit Malik (125kg).
