Underutilized Washington Sundar grinds Hard in Nets Ahead of IND vs IRE 3rd T20I

All-rounder Washington Sundar has not lived up to his expectations in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland.

All-rounder Washington Sundar has not lived up to his expectations in the ongoing T20I series. However, that’s not the present scenario, this has been the story of Sundar in the international arena for a decent amount of time. Just like Sanju Samson, Sundar has been among the few cricketers from South India who have not lived up the hype. In the ongoing series against Ireland, Sundar has just bowled a total of five overs and gave away 38 runs without taking any wickets. He has not batted in the series so far.

Sundar is not part of the Indian squad for Asia Cup and World Cup 2023

The BCCI recently announced the Indian squad for upcoming Asia Cup with Sundar even no where in the contention. Despite playing his first international match in 2017. The 23-year-old has played just 57 matches in a span of six years. As mentioned above, the young all-rounder has not been given enough chances in the international arena.

As one of only two spin-bowling all-rounders in Team India’s squad for the T20I series against Ireland, Washington Sundar was always going to have a central role to play despite the conditions not really supporting his bowling. Given the composition of Ireland’s batting lineup and the conditions in Dublin, Sundar doesn’t have a lot going for him. However, the 23-year-old hasn’t inspired much confidence at all.

Meanwhile, the third match of the series against Ireland provides an opportunity for the think tank to assess players like Avesh Khan, Jitesh Sharma, and Shahbaz Ahmed, who have not yet played in the series. Avesh has been benched for seven straight matches, and if he is not given a chance to play, he will go into the Asian Games without any game time, which could be detrimental to both him and the team. However, the Indian camp has minutely confirmed that the skipper Bumrah and Prasidh will not be rested as they need more game time ahead of the marquee event.

It remains to be seen if Sundar will be retaining his position in the final match of the series. If not Sundar then Shahbaz should be the ideal replacement for the off-spinner in the playing. The third T20I between India and Ireland starts on August 24 at 07:30PM IST.
