US Open 2023 Qualifying: Sumit Nagal, Karman Thandi lose in first round

Three Indians - Sumit Nagal, Ankita Raina and Karman Kaur Thandi - will be in action in Round 1 of the US Open 2023 qualifiers on Tuesday, 22nd August 2023.

US Open 2023 Qualifying Round 1 LIVE: Raina vs Bulgaru LIVE – The Qualifying round for the US Open 2023 has begun. First round action is currently underway. Ankita Raina is facing Miriam Bulgaru. However Karman Thandi and Sumit Nagal lost their respective first round matches.

Sumit Nagal vs Taro Daniel

Sumit Nagal was able to enter the qualifying round at the US Open this year with his impressive performances in the last few months. The 25-year old clinched his career’s fourth ATP Challenger title by winning the Tampere Open last month. By virtue of his win, he jumped up 53 places and broke into the Top 200 in the rankings.

He is currently ranked 190th in the rankings. The 26-year old will be up against 95th ranked Taro Daniel in the first round of the qualifiers. The Japanese is looking to reach the main draw in the US Open for the fourth successive year. Both the players will be facing each other or the first time and the Japanese enters the contest as the favourite.

Karman Kaur Thandi vs Oceane Dodin

Karman Kaur Thandi will be making her debut in the US Open qualifiers. The 25-year old Indian will face 18th seed Oceane Dodin in the first round of the qualifiers. Karman much recently won an ITF Title at a tournament in Evansville, USA. The title helped her jump 51 places to go up to 210 in the WTA Rankings. This helped her qualify for the US Open qualifiers.

Dodin made it to the main draw at the US Open last year. The Frenchwoman last played in the main draw at a Grand Slam event at the French Open this year. Both Dodin and Karman will be facing each other for the first time in their career in the WTA Tour.

Ankita Raina vs Miriam Bulgaru

India’s No.1 Women’s Singles player Ankita Raina is looking to finally go past the qualifiers and make her maiden appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam event. The 30-year old is ranked 154th in the world and she faces Romania’s Miriam Bulgaru in the first round.

Ankita has played in the qualifiers at the French Open and the Wimbledon this year. While she bowed out from the second round of the quallifying round at Roland Garros, she couldn’t go past the first round at Wimbledon qualifiers. Bulgaru meanwhile is ranked 214th in the world. The 24-year old makes her debut in the qualifiers at the US Open.

The US Open 2023 will start on Monday, 28th August 2023.
