Scoring a World Cup Final goal is the dream of every football player. Spanish player, Olga Carmona achieved this dream on Sunday as her goal propelled Spain to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. However, what followed was a set of tragic events.
As per reports, Carmona’s father had passed away on Friday, two days before he could watch his daughter score the winner in the WC Final.

After learning of her father’s death following Spain’s victory over England on Sunday, World Cup final hero Olga Carmona posted a tearful homage to him on Twitter. It is believed that Carmona’s father passed away on Friday, but the 23-year-old defender was kept in the dark about the passing in order to protect her mental state before the match against the Lionesses.
The Spanish Football Federation tweeted after the game, ‘We deeply regret to announce the death of Olga Carmona’s father. The footballer learnt the sad news after the World Cup final. We love you, Olga, you are part of Spanish football history.’

But the 23-year-old, who beat England’s Mary Earps for the game’s lone goal, said in a post later on Sunday night that her father had “given me the strength to achieve something unique.”
Her tweet said, ‘And without knowing it, I had my star before the game started. I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique. I know that you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace dad.’
Carmona had written a message for a friend whose mother had recently passed away on her shirt as she celebrated her first goal of the game. It was reminiscent of the tribute made by Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta to his late buddy Dani Jarque in the 2010 men’s World Cup final when Spain scored the game-winning goal.
Left-back, Carmona, who also scored a late goal in Spain’s victory over Sweden in the semi-final, was named player of the game in the final on Sunday. She and her teammates danced around Sydney Stadium as they celebrated their team’s victory on the field.
Real Madrid issued a statement Sunday night expressing their condolences to the player and her family. Irene Paredes, a teammate of Carmona’s from Spain, lost her father a few days before the country started its World Cup preparations. On Sunday, the defender gave him a title dedication.

In what was a very exciting World Cup Final, the Spanish giants trumped the Lionesses to win the trophy. The only difference between the two sides was Olga Carmona’s goal. Spain was the better team through the 90 minutes and they deserved to win the World Cup too.
