Khabib Nurmagomedov Names Family’s New ‘Flag Bearer’
One source said this event could see multiple title fights on the card as it could be the final event in Bellator history. It’s also unclear if this fight will be the main event of the historic and potential final Bellator event.
Usman, Khabib’s cousin, appears to have all the makings of a star and has demonstrated this in recent performances. Nurmagomedov mercilessly dispatched Benson Henderson in the space of a single round after winning the championship by a convincing decision over Patricky Pitbull. With the victory, the newest lightweight champion in promotion history was able to defend his title for the first time and advance to the next stage of the Bellator Lightweight Grand Prix.
Khabib Nurmagomedov Names Family’s New ‘Flag Bearer’ After 3 Years of Father’s Death
Khabib Nurmagomedov posted about the upcoming event of his cousin’s brother competing via his Instagram account. “ Historical #Bellator300 event in San Diego, California headlined by my Brother @usman_nurmagomedov vs Brent Primus. Step by step my young brother is moving forward and he’s the flag bearer of our Family in the international arena today. October 7 his second title defense 🤲🔝 Let’s go my Brother @usman_nurmagomedov”
Usman Nurmagomedov (17-0) recently defeated Benson Henderson by first-round submission to defend his lightweight championship for the first time; the bout also served as the grand prix quarterfinal. Nurmagomedov defeated Patricky Pitbull via decision at Bellator 288 to claim the title.
Nurmagomedov is 6-0 in his Bellator career and has major victories against Mike Hamel and Chris Gonzalez. Before to Bellator, the 25-year-old competed for UAE Warriors and Gorilla Fighting Championship.
In the quarterfinals of the grand prix at Bellator 296 in May, Mansour Baranoui was defeated by decision by Brent Primus (12-3). After losing to Alexander Shabily in the second round through TKO, the victory allowed him to return to the win column. Before that, he defeated Benson Henderson by decision after falling to Islam Mamedov in a contentious split decision.
In October, Primus, the former lightweight champion of Bellator, hopes to reclaim his crown. Primus is 10-3 in Bellator and defeated Michael Chandler to earn the title back in 2017. However, he lost the title against Chandler in a rematch by decision. Primus has achieved important victories over Tim Wilde, Derek Anderson, and Gleristone Santos over his career.
Alexander Shabily and Patricky Pitbull are the other semifinal opponent, but it’s unknown when or even if that bout will take place given Bellator’s uncertain future.
