Vetran India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has broken his silence regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma absence in T20 cricket ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have strategically opted out of the T20I series as the cricketing world prepares for the eagerly awaited ODI World Cup 2023. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has come forth to support their choice, despite some people possibly questioning their absence from the shorter format.
Both Virat Kohli and Rohit have been practising for the forthcoming 50-over World Cup at home after not playing in T20 internationals since India’s loss to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Although their absence from recent T20I matches against the West Indies and Ireland has drawn criticism, Ashwin defended their conduct.
“From 50 overs to 20 overs, there is a complete switch in mindset. Both of them skipping and getting ready for the 50-over World Cup is a good decision,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma doing the right thing?
Ashwin went on to say that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s decision to forgo T20Is was influenced by their extensive expertise and in-depth knowledge of the game.
“They are using their experience and want to concentrate on the 50-over World Cup, which is exactly the right thing to do,” Ashwin added.
The Indian squad is having trouble making decisions on the middle order while the focus is still on the two senior batters (Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma). The team management is attempting to find the best combination out of the players who have tried out for the position.
The selection process is made much more intriguing by the anticipated returns of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who underwent surgery during the Indian Premier League 2023.
Ashwin voiced faith in the team’s talents in the bowling department. “We know the spinners as well. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. We have a backup spinning all-rounder in the form of Axar Patel.”
He listed the depth of the bowling lineup, including Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah.
Mohammed Siraj was hailed by Ashwin as the best player for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. He called Siraj a “automatic pick.”
