- It was the Serbian’s first ever victory after playing a full match since his Wimbleon final loss.
- Earlier in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters, he was given a walkover as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina suffered a back injury.
- Djokovic featured in only three hardcourt tournaments earlier this year. He won the titles at the Adelaide International and the Australian Open. He also made it to the semifinal at Dubai Tennis Championships. He is now eyeing his fourth successive semifinal appearance on the surface this season.
- Taylor Fritz began his campaign at Cincinnati Masters with a 7-6, 6-2 win against Jiri Lehecka.
- In the second round he yet again clinched a straight set win by sailing past Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-6.
- He then faced Dusan Lajovic in the third round. He was leading the contest 5-0 but Lajovic retired from the contest after suffering an injury.
- Playing in front of his home crowd, Fritz would want to register his maiden victory against Djokovic.
- He will also be eager to make it to his second semifinal on hardcourts ahead of the US Open this year. Few weeks back he made it to trhe last-four stage at the Citi Open but lost the contest to Tallon Griekspoor.
