Ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, Ravi Shastri, Sandip Patil and MSK Prasad sat down to pick India’s 15-member squad for the tournament. Surprisingly none of the former selectors decided to keep KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer in their choices. Interestingly Tilak Varma and Yuzvenra Chahal found their names in the picks.
No KL Rahul & Shreyas Iyer
It is no surprise that KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are returning from lengthy injuries and are keen on making a comeback for the Men In Blue. But 2 former chief selectors and 1 head coach of the Indian team, decided not to give the duo a chance in their experts talk.
The duo are currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and will join the Asia Cup camp starting on 24th August. But it remains to be seen if they are selected for the team or not. The NCA and the BCCI Selection Committee will take a final call for both players based on their match readiness and fitness.
Tilak Varma & Yuzi Chahal gets a chance
Tilak Varma has been splendid in the 5 T20I matches that he recently played against the West Indies. Despite India losing the series 3-2, Tilak Varma’s revelation has been the greatest gift for the Men in Blue. Ravi Shastri argued that he needs a mighty left-hander in the middle order and the 20-year-old southpaw fits the bill.
But there will be reservations for the player. It is highly likely that he will be fast-tracked into the team given he hasn’t made his debut for India in ODIs and bringing a young player with no international experience per se can be a huge gamble for the side. On the other hand, Yuzvendra Chahal who has been in poor form off late has been a surprise addition to the squad. But it can also be argued that Chahal can easily weave his magic in the slow-turning pitches of Sri Lanka.
