Here we go. At last, better late than never, Baby AB Dewald Brevis has received his maiden call-up for South Africa Cricket team for Australia series. Renowned as Baby AB for his uncanny similarities with the Proteas legend AB de Villiers, Brevis has already made a name for himself in T20 franchise cricket. Now, with just 52 days left for World Cup 2023, he has got the nod in both ODIs and T20Is in SA vs AUS series. South Africa vs Australia series begins on August 30.

Despite putting in the hard yards and an impressive IPL 2022 campaign, Dewald Brevis was not among the names in the T20 World Cup. However, now that South Africa are eying a reboot in both formats, they have decided to throw him in against the best team in the world, Australia.

The 19-member squad for three ODIs will serve as the preliminary squad for World Cup 2023. The squad will then undergo a few chopping before the final squad for World Cup 2023.

“We are looking for opportunities to grow our base of players. The T20I series against Australia is a perfect chance to give some of the rising cricketers the chance to show us what they are capable of. For this reason, we have included players such as Dewald, Donovan and Matthew,” South Africa white-ball coach Rob Walter said.

Dewald Brevis was the top-scorer of U19 World Cup 2022. And since then, he impressed in IPL, SA20, MLC and even domestic cricket in South Africa. Brevis scored 165 runs in 5 innings at an average of 41.25. With World Cup 2023 around the corner, he could impress selectors with some good knocks.

Apart from Brevis, Donovan Fereira and Matthew Breetzke have also earned maiden call-ups.

“These are guys that have been performing consistently week in and week out domestically so we are now looking forward to seeing what they can do at the next level. They also possess a particular skill set that fits into the way we are looking to play the game moving forward,” Walter added.
