Despite an uninspired display against unfancied Wolves at Old Trafford, Raphael Varane’s close-range header won a 1-0 win for Manchester United.

Before Varane’s 76th-minute winner, Gary O’Neil’s visitors had the best of the chances. In what was a spirited performance by the Brazilian forward, Matheus Cunha missed a wonderful opportunity to put Wolves ahead early in the second half.

Wolves had been presented as a team in chaos in the previous week following a fire-sale of elite talent. The abrupt departure of Spanish manager Julen Lopetegui exacerbated the situation. Former Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil took over five days ago.

However, it was the visitors who generated more than enough chances to win. A late penalty appeal was also denied by the Video Assistant Referee at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag had emphasised the necessity for his side to “raise the bar” before the game. However, it was a lethargic performance from United in front of their own fans. Things were unlocked by a wonderful pass from Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross reaching Varane.

Wolves still had chances, as substitute Fabio Silva twice forced United’s new goalkeeper Andre Onana into good saves late in the game. There was even a penalty check in stoppage time when Onana collided with Sasa Kalajdzic while failing to claim the ball.

O’Neil was arrested for his accusations, yet even in defeat, he will be encouraged.Despite his team’s victory, Ten Hag will undoubtedly be concerned.
