What drives Virat Kohli forward? Prolific batter gives a sneak peek into his mind

Self-belief, analytical mind and ability to remain calm under pressure make Kohli one of the best cricketers of his generation

You might love or hate Virat Kohli, but there’s no denying the fact that there seldom came a cricketer as motivated as the former Indian captain. Ahead of Asia Cup 2023, which could very well be his last continental campaign, King Kohli gave a sneak peek into his mind.

His on-field attitude has been subject to criticism by experts and commoners alike, but his steely nerves, flawless technique and ability to back himself in crunch moments have helped him become one of the best batters in the world.

What sets Kohli apart?

So, what is the driving force behind Kohli’s motivation? In a recent interview, the former Indian captain revealed what keeps him going despite the sneers and jeers of the people, and it’s not Anushka Sharma!

“People will always have opinions and judgments, but I have learned to trust my instincts and have confidence in my abilities. This self-belief has been the driving force behind all my achievements on the cricket field,” Kohli said in an interview with The Indian Express.

“…what has truly defined me as a person is my ability to stay resilient and keep pushing forward, no matter how difficult the circumstances,” he further added.

Virat Kohli’s batting average while chasing a total speaks volumes about his mental strength but his highly analytical mind remains slightly underrated compared to his batting prowess. The ability to analyse his mistakes and work on them makes him a world-beater.

“This self-belief helps me stay positive and focused on improving my game… I draw inspiration from my past successes and learnings. Reflecting on the moments when I performed at my best and analysing the areas where I can improve from losses, helps me grow as a player. Every setback becomes an opportunity for me to come back stronger,” said the India batter.

What’s next for Kohli?

Kohli will fly away to Bangalore on August 23 and join the rest of the team to prepare for the Asia Cup tournament. India is all set to kick off the campaign with a high-voltage match against Pakistan on September 02.
