Chance for ODI World Cup 2023 call? Tilak Varma backed by ex-India selector

The 20-year-old southpaw from Hyderabad has truly caught the eye with his performances in the West Indies T20I series. Displaying his finesse, he has registered scores of 39, 50, and an unbeaten 49 across three matches.

Former Indian selector MSK Prasad has commended Tilak Varma for his impressive performances in the ongoing T20I series against the West Indies. Varma, who secured his first T20I half-century during the second match of the series, has continued to showcase his skills in the subsequent games. Considering the uncertainty surrounding KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s availability due to injury, MSK Prasad has suggested that Tilak Varma could be a valuable addition to the upcoming Asia Cup and ODI World Cup 2023 squads.

“Look at his List A record for Hyderabad. He has played 25 List A games and has an average of 55 plus. Five hundreds and five half-centuries. It means at least 50 per cent times he is converting fifties into hundreds. A strike rate of 100 plus,” MSK Prasad told PTI.

“It won’t be a bad idea provided Shreyas (Iyer) can’t make it. Only then can you think of Varma. But I am sure he will be a white ball regular for India across formats going forward,” MSK Prasad added.

In the vibrant landscape of the Indian Premier League 2022, Varma emerged as a standout luminary. Despite the Mumbai Indians’ early exit from the tournament, Varma’s cricketing prowess spoke volumes. Hailing from his participation in the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, he was snatched up by MI in the IPL 2022 auction. His bat resonated eloquently, amassing an impressive 393 runs at an average of 36.09 during that season. Building on this success, Varma continued his momentum into 2023, notching up 343 runs.
