Nevertheless, despite Gaethje’s victory over Dustin Poirier last month and a subsequent call from McGregor, the newly crowned BMF champion isn’t holding his breath for a matchup with “Notorious” to happen.

Gaethje had mentioned McGregor’s absence from the USADA testing pool a few days prior. The Irishman must undergo six months of consistent testing before being permitted to compete in the UFC.

The 35-year-old will next square off against fellow “The Ultimate Fighter” coach Michael Chandler, though a time and location have not yet been determined.

The prospect of McGregor vs. Gaethje coming up next has grown thanks to remarks made by both guys on Tuesday night.

The 34-year-old Gaethje tweeted, “Sign the contract big boy.”

Justin Gaethje said, “I definitely have no worries or issues. I’m not worried about it, If for some reason, I get a phone call one day and they want to talk about it, I’ll entertain the conversation. But … my focus is on the winner of October.”

That refers to Islam Makhachev’s lightweight world title defence against Charles Oliveira at UFC 294 on October 21, which is a rematch from when Makhachev defeated Oliveira by arm-triangle choke in the second round last October.

Gaethje utilised that upcoming contest to give McGregor another slow, agonising burn before shattering the hope that they would ever square off.

Looking up at the champion Makhachev, Gaethje is currently placed second in the lightweight division, just behind Oliveira.

Gaethje lost to Oliveira in a rear-naked choke submission in May 2022, but he quickly rebounded with two victories in a row, including the head kick KO of Poirier in the second round.

Since injuring his leg in his trilogy bout with Poirier in July 2021, McGregor has not competed.
