Babar Azam’s cover drive is a thing of beauty. The Pakistan captain displayed his class and elegance in the LPL match between Colombo Strikers and Dambulla Aura on Saturday. He played a sublime shot off the bowling of Pramod Madushan, piercing the gap between cover and point with exquisite timing and placement. The ball raced to the boundary, leaving the fans in awe. It was a shot that sent a warning sign to Team India, who will face Pakistan on September 2 in the Asia Cup 2023.

Azam was in sublime form, scoring 41 off 24 balls with seven fours. He looked set for a big score, but his innings was cut short by a controversial DRS call. He was given not out lbw to Noor Ahmed in the ninth over, but the Dambulla team reviewed the decision, confident that he had hit the ball. The Hawkye showed ball pitching just in line which should have been an umpire’s call. However, Babar was given out after three reds. Azam was shocked and walked back to the pavilion.

The DRS controversy sparked a lot of outrage on social media, as fans questioned the decision and the technology. Many felt that Azam was robbed of a potential match-winning knock and that the DRS system needed to be improved. Here are some of the reactions on Twitter:

Babar Zama’s wicket turned out to be match turning point as the Colombo Strikers could not accelarate and got restricted to 182/4 in chase of 193. Nuwanidu Fernando was the top scorer for Strikers with an unbeaten 52.
