Man United have started their campaign well, but seem to be losing their hold as the end of their pre-season campaign is nearing. On the other hand, Lens have managed to remain unbeaten with 4 draws in their pre-season friendlies.

The arrival of Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United at the start of last season saw them improve their situation by a significant amount. He helped the team end their 6-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup. They even reached the FA Cup finals. They lost the cup to the treble winners Manchester City in the end. The Red Devils also ended the season in 3rd place in the Premier League table. That means they qualified for this year’s Champions League after being absent from the competition for a year.
Man United started their preparation for a tough season ahead with three consecutive wins respectively against Leeds United by a 2-0 margin and against Lyon by a 1-0 margin. Their third win was by a 2-0 margin against Premier League giants Arsenal. It was followed up by an exhibitionary penalty shootout which they won by a 5-3 margin. Since then, their second team lost 1-3 against Wrexham, while the first team lost 2-0 to Real Madrid and 2-3 to Borussia Dortmund. They next play against Athletic Club before starting the Premier League campaign.
Lens had one of their best seasons in the longest time. They ranked the highest in the Ligue 1 table since 2002. They ended the season in 2nd place in the league table, only 1 point behind the league leaders and Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain. This means they have also qualified for the upcoming season’s Champions League group stage. The feat has come after 21 years of waiting. Hence, they will aim to make the best out of the opportunity in this upcoming season.
Their preparations in the pre-season are going well so far. They’ve been busy playing 6 friendlies where they have secured 2 wins and 4 draws. Their opening two games ended up in 4-4 and 2-2 draws, respectively against Dunkerque and Amiens SC. Then they won two consecutive matches against Sochaux and Dijon FCO respectively by 3-0 and 2-0 margins. They are approaching their last pre-season friendly against Man United on the back of two 1-1 and 0-0 draws respectively against Wolfsburg and Torino. Then they’ll begin their Ligue1 1 campaign against Brest on August 13.

Manchester United Team News
- With two friendlies set to be held in two consecutive days, it’s unclear what kind of starting XI coach Ten Hag is thinking of fielding in their next two friendlies against Lens on Saturday and Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. However, considering the match is at their home ground, the coach could start his strongest XI to get some advantage very soon into the match.
- The starting lineup could reflect how the coach plans to line up against Wolves in their first Premier League match of the season. New signings Andre Onana and Mason Mount could make their home debut in the match. The coach will probably make wholesale changes from the squad that took the field against Dortmund.
- The coach also has some unwanted injury concerns this close to the start of the season. Amad Diallo, Dean Henderson, Kobbie Mainoo, and Tyrell Malacia will remain sidelined due to injuries. Whereas, Raphael Varane, Alejandro Garnacho, and Anthony Martial are also recovering from injuries that put them in a doubtful place at this stage.
Lens Team News
- Lens have lost some key players during this summer transfer window. They lost Lois Openda to RB Leipzig. He was one of their most important players who scored 21 goals for the Ligue 1 side last season. They also lost their second-highest goalscorer, Seko Fofana. Hence, it will be difficult for them against the Premier League giants.
- Even with the key departures, they are strengthening their team after a near-successful season last term around. They have a few new signings – Oscar Cortes, Angelo Fulgini, and Andy Diouf, who could expect to get places in the starting XI in this match against Man United.
- In the absence of their key forwards, the coach could call up Wesley Said, who scored six times last season, to lead in the final third on Saturday. The coach could call up Przemyslaw Frankowski and Adrien Thomasson to feature alongside Said in the attacking front.
