The Canadian Province of Alberta, the “preferred host” for the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), has withdrawn their bid. This comes as a huge blow to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
Alberta cites high expenses as the reason, the same one that led Victoria to decline the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG).

Following Board meetings about choices for the 2026 edition prior to the Commonwealth Youth Games, CGF chief executive Katie Sadleir acknowledged Alberta’s departure as “not great news.”
“It has given us the opportunity to have a look at who is interested, but at the same time think about what we might do that might be quite different, so that process is ongoing, so that process is ongoing in terms of having discussions with some of our members to talk about what could be the opportunities in the short-term,” Sadleir told insidethegames.
“We were in a bid process for 2030 and are still for 2034, we put that out to our members, and we will continue having discussions with some of our members that are potential hosts that are interested in the Games.”

Joseph Schow, the tourism and sports minister for Alberta, asserted that the province could not justify the costs associated with hosting the Commonwealth Games (CWG).
As part of the Alberta bid, Edmonton and Calgary were anticipated to be important cities.
The Alberta government had already committed up to CAD$2 million (£1.2 million, $1.5 million, or €1.4 million) for a feasibility study on the proposal.
The CSC accepted the Provincial Government’s decision and asserted that Victoria’s unexpected abandonment of the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) earlier this month had an impact on it.
Due to an overrun in anticipated expenses, Australia’s Victoria state withdrew as the 2026 Commonwealth Games’ host last month. The rural hubs of Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Gippsland, and Shepparton were slated to host the 2026 Games from March 17–29.
In 1930, the British Empire Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, and since 1978, the Commonwealth Games (CWG) have gone by their current name. Teams from 54 Commonwealth nations, 17 overseas territories, and island states compete in the Games, which have been held in England, Australia, New Zealand, Wales, Jamaica, Scotland, Malaysia, and India. The Games are held every four years.
