New ERA for RCB! Andy Flower replaces Sanjay Bangar as head coach

The St. Lucia Zouks in the CPL (2020), the Multan Sultans in the PSL (2021), and the Gulf Giants in the ILT20 (2023) are just a few of the T20 teams that Andy Flower is involved with on a global scale.

The new era for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is all set to start from Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024). RCB’s director of cricket operations, Mike Hesson, will stand down from his position on August 31. Andy Flower will replace Sanjay Bangar as the head coach.

Sanjay Bangar, the head coach of the RCB, and the remaining members of Hesson’s support staff have been let go.

“Andy has coached the International and franchise cricket teams for over a decade and in that time has won PSL, The Hundred, ILT20, T10. He went onto be a hugely successful coach for England, winning home and away Ashes campaigns as well as the T20 World Cup in 2010 taking England test team to No1 in the world. He is also the first player from Zimbabwe to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame,” RCB said in a media release confirming Flower’s appointment.

According to Cricbuzz, Flower was in talks with a number of organizations, including the Rajasthan Royals. It is now clear that the Bengaluru-based franchise has retained his services for the ensuing years, nevertheless.

Andy Flower’s entry also marks departure of both Mike Hesson as well as Sanjay Bangar.

“RCB also confirmed the decision of not renewing the contract of Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson and Head Coach Sanjay Bangar. It is part of the internal review that the team has concluded post the end of the previous season. The franchise places its gratitude to both of these dignitaries for all their efforts during their time with RCB for the last four seasons,” RCB added.

Although it’snot official yet, there is a chance that AB de Villiers may return to RCB as the mentor. As per reports, De Villiers, who made a significant contribution to the franchise’s success, may work with Flower.

After his two-year deal with the Lucknow Super Giants expired after the IPL 2023, Andy Flower’s affiliation with them ended earlier this year. Justin Langer has already joined LSG.

Hesson’s appointment in 2019 came after a similarly thorough hiring procedure. Evidently, the team did a thorough examination of Andy Flower, a highly regarded player in the world of cricket.

St Lucia Zouks in the CPL (2020), the Multan Sultans in the PSL (2021), and the Gulf Giants in the ILT20 (2023) are just a few of the T20 teams that Andy Flower is involved with on a global scale. He also provided advice to the coaching staff of the Australian team during the just-completed Ashes series. Andy Flower actually spent the final three Ashes Tests in the Australian team’s dressing room.

Mike Hesson started working with RCB in 2019, during which the squad earned playoffs spot three times. Unfortunately, Shubman Gill’s outstanding performance prevented them from achieving their goal of finishing in the top four in the IPL 2023.
