The decision was confirmed by the WBO on Thursday, with Charlo being allowed to retain his title up until the time he fights Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 30.

Charlo, who has held all four belts at 154-pounds since defeating Brian Castano last May, is jumping up two weight classes for a shot at the super-middleweight champion.

The move has left Tszyu, who has been knocking on the door of a fight with Charlo, out in the cold. The pair were originally scheduled to meet in January before Charlo suffered a hand injury.

Despite the setback, Tszyu has been making the most of his time, scoring knockout wins over Tony Harrison and Carlos Ocampo in the meantime. The Sydneysider thought he had finally secured his shot at Charlo, only for the Canelo bout to throw a spanner in the works.

As for Charlo, the decision to relinquish his title may come as a disappointment, but he will no doubt be focusing his attention on his upcoming fight with Canelo.

Overall, the decision to strip Charlo of his title and elevate Tszyu to world champion status has set the stage for an exciting new chapter in the super-welterweight division.
