KL Rahul takes break from NCA, Asia Cup 2023 return likely

Almost match-fit, KL Rahul is likely to return in India vs Ireland T20 series. Before that, he took a break from NCA fitness regime to rejuvenate.

Almost there in terms of match-fitness, KL Rahul is likely to return to action in the Asia Cup 2023. Having spent the last one and half months at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, KL Rahul took a day off from his monotonous recovery routine. He went kayaking and paintball with his friends. Despite resuming batting in the nets, Rahul was deemed not fit enough for the IND vs IRE T20 series.

Will KL Rahul play in IND vs IRE T20?

While KL Rahul was expected to return, he was not named in the squad for the IND vs IRE series. Sanju Samson & Jitesh Sharma were named keepers for the 3 T20I series.

The delay in announcing the Ireland squad is also because the selectors want to have a status report on KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah injuries. The trio will be crucial for India Cricket Team in the Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup 2023. Hence, before the tough Asia Cup, it will be good if they can play some competitive matches.

Apart from KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer will also play a few practice games at the NCA. There is currently a camp for players who are not on the West Indies tour. Some of the domestic players are also at the NCA for a camp. The players who are returning from injuries will play against them at the NCA.

But for now, it’s not certain whether KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will feature in IND vs IRE series. But BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has declared that Jasprit Bumrah is fit to play.

“Bumrah is totally fit, and he may go to Ireland,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.

Bumrah (lower back injury) has been out since July 2022. KL Rahul (Thigh injury) is out of action since IPL 2023. Shreyas Iyer (back injury) has missed IPL 2023 and WTC Final. All three had to undergo surgeries with Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup 2023 being two important events this year.
