The heated encounter between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir in IPL 2023 didn’t bode very well with former India skipper Kapil Dev. The 1983 World Cup-winning captain has urged the BCCI to groom the players so that they become good citizens. Virat Kohli got engaged in a war of words with Gautam Gambhir along with LSG bowler Naveen-ul-Haq.
“They (BCCI) have to groom players to be good citizens also. What happened between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli in the IPL, it was painful for me,” said Kapil in an interview THE WEEK.

After the incident, Kohli and Haq engaged in a social media squabble where they continued to take digs at each other. However, the BCCI was not pleased with the incident and as per Kapil Dev, the incident was ‘painful’ to watch. Dev further went on to claim how the ugly spat between Gambhir and Kohli could have been avoided.

In an interview with THE WEEK, Kapil Dev specified how the veteran players have started to become arrogant with time passing by. The former India captain also shared his thoughts on how the apex cricketing board of the country can work to keep the players grounded.
“My two most important people―Virat Kohli, one of the top batters in the world; Gambhir is now member of Parliament―how can they behave in such a manner? But sportsmen do lose their mind, from Pelé to Don Bradman to all people,” said Kapil Dev.
After the ugly spat in the IPL 2023 between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants, the BCCI decided to fine both Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir. While Naveen-ul-Haq was handed a hefty fine.
