Ajinkya Rahane takes break from cricket, withdraws from Leicestershire stint

Rahane was originally scheduled to join Leicestershire in June, but he was unable to do so because of his involvement in the World Test Championship final against Australia and the ensuing Tests against the West Indies.

Team India Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who was slated to join Leicestershire for the forthcoming One-Day Cup, won’t be playing because he has decided to take a brief sabbatical from cricket.

Ajinkya Rahane was originally scheduled to join Leicestershire in June, but he was unable to do so because of his involvement in the World Test Championship final against Australia and the ensuing Tests against the West Indies.

“With those involvements previously not factored into his schedule, the 35-year-old has now expressed his desire to take a break from cricket during August and September,” stated Leicestershire.

Ajinkya Rahane will be replaced by Peter Handscomb, who has been a member of the Leicestershire preparation for the County Championship and the T20 Blast.

Claude Henderson, Leicestershire’s director of cricket, said: “Firstly, we are fully understanding of Ajinkya Rahane situation. He has experienced a hectic schedule in recent months, both in India and travelling with the national team, and we accept his wishes to recover and spend some time with his family.

“We have been in constant communication with Ajinkya and accept how situations can change quickly in cricket. He is extremely grateful for our understanding and still hopes to play for Leicestershire one day.

“We are happy that Peter is remaining on with the team because, thankfully, we had prepared for a circumstance like this. Along with his batting and wicketkeeping, he also possesses a strong leadership style, which is a huge benefit to Lewis (Hill) and the other men in our changing room,” Claude concluded.
