Atletico Madrid ended last season in 3rd place in the La Liga table. At times, they jumped up to 2nd place overtaking Real Madrid. However, they couldn’t hold on to the place. Additionally, their campaign in Europe faltered poorly. Before the upcoming season starts, they are rebuilding the squad to give better competition. Cesar Azpilicueta, Caglar Soyuncu, and Javi Galan arrived at the club at the start of July. They also signed Antoine Griezmann on a permanent contract from the loan deal.
Joao Felix also returned to the club after his loan spell ended with Chelsea. However, their start to the pre-season has still not gone well. Atletico Madrid were leading 2-1 in the last few moments of the game. However, it took only 5 minutes for K-League All-Stars to turn the game on its head. They lost the match by a 3-2 margin. After their high-voltage match against Man City, they will face Real Sociedad and Sevilla. They start their La Liga campaign against Granada on August 15.
Man City are still in celebratory mode after winning the treble last season. They started their pre-season campaign in Asia with their first match set against Yokohama F. Marinos. The J-League team seemed to be getting a hold of the match as they took a 2-0 lead within the first 37 minutes of the match. However, Man City took back control as they scored 5 goals. One more goal by Kenta Inoue in the 86th minute did not help the Marinos. Within days, they faced their old foe Bayern Munich.
They came up as the winners another time with a late goal from Aymeric Laporte. Their next friendly against Atletico Madrid will be the last pre-season match for the Cityzens before they face Arsenal in the FA Community Shield on August 16th. Next, Man City legend Vincent Kompany will start planning to get one over his former employers as Burnley coach in their first Premier League match. Man City will then look to add the first trophy of this season in the UEFA Super Cup final against Sevilla.

Atletico Madrid Team News
- Man City have remained quiet in this transfer window as their only significant inclusion to the team has been Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea. However, major players like Riyad Mahrez and former captain Ilkay Gundogan left the club this summer. In Gundogan’s absence, the coach deployed Kyle Walker as captain in their last two friendlies.
- Waller should be starting as the captain in this match as well. However, he is heavily linked with a move away to Bayern Munich. The same goes for their last match-winning goal scorer Aymeric Laporte. Coach Guardiola has the option of the versatile teenager Rico Lewis to replace Walker. In the midst of this, the coach stressed the fact that they don’t want new fresh injuries in the pre-season campaign.
- So far, Man City have succeeded in this as they have not sustained any new injuries from their last two matches. Their only injury concern which revolved around Kevin De Bruyne is also gone. The playmaker recently recovered from the hamstring tear he sustained during the Champions League final. He will soon be back on the field.
- Youngsters James McAtee and Maximo Perrone got some playing time last week against Bayern Munich. McAtee even scored the opening goal against the German champions so that he could get some playing time again this time around. Former Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri will also be hoping for a start against his former employers.
Manchester City Team News
- Atletico Madrid have been without their two key defenders in their last match. The two players will still be sidelined against Man City due to injuries. Jose Maria Gimenez is out because of a shin injury and Nahuel Molina is suffering from a calf issue. Both will probably be unavailable for several more weeks.
- In the absence of Gimenez, the coach started Axel Witsel in his place in the centre-back position on Thursday. However, this time around, the new arrivals Caglar Soyuncu and Santiago Mourino could get the chance to show their skills against Man City. Additionally, Alvaro Morata, who has been linked with a move away to Serie A, will probably start the match.
