Ahead of the IND vs WI 2nd ODI at Bridgetown, former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund has backed Shubman Gill to come back with a bang. Mukund stated that Gill is a top player, and fans are mixing the formats when it comes to the right-handers’ performance of late. Gill currently averages 62 with the bat in ODIs; however, the batter has struggled in Tests, averaging just 32 in 18 matches. Gill made just 31 in 2 innings in the WTC Final in June. In the recently concluded India vs West Indies Test series, the batter made just 45 runs in three innings, averaging just 22.5.
Mukund, when asked about Gill’s performance on the India tour of West Indies, said, “I think it’s too early to talk about Shubman Gill’s failure because he has had a phenomenal last couple of years. It is important, as a viewer and as an Indian cricket fan, to not mess up formats. I feel we always tend to mix up formats, and we tend to drop here and there, and we tend to associate form concerned with certain formats. The Test format is done with. As far as ODIs are concerned, Shubman Gill is our top player, and I think he should go to the World Cup. I don’t think his form is a concern. I’m sure he’ll be back with a bang.”

The former opener also believes that the Indian management will not make any changes to the playing XI for the second ODI.
“No, I don’t see India making any changes to the playing XI, primarily because they have handed a debut to Mukesh Kumar and also given him the new ball. Hardik Pandya and Mukesh Kumar will open the bowling in this series,” said Mukund.
