Five Ways Justin Gaethje can beat Dustin Poirier at UFC 291

5. Early Finish: If Gaethje wants to ensure that he beats Dustin Poirier, he has to try to get the early finish. The later the fight goes, the more Dustin Poirier settles in. And we saw in the first fight that once Poirier has found his range, he can be very dangerous. Therefore, If Gaethje goes for the early finish, it could result in him getting the win.

4. Body Shots: If Gaethje can’t finish Poirier early, he should invest in body shots. Poirier has incredible cardio. And body shots will hamper his breathing and affect his cardio. Moreover, it will also take away the power from his shots.

3. Level Changes: Poirier likes to get into a rhythm and then pick his opponents apart. Therefore, if Gaethje can shoot for more takedowns earlier, it could disrupt Poirier’s rhythm. In the first fight, Gaethje did not attempt many takedowns. If he wants to win this time around, it’s time he focuses on level changes.

2. Focus on kicks: In the first fight, Gaethje enjoyed a lot of success with his inside kicks. Moreover, since Poirier prefers to fight out of range, the kicks will be the only way to ensure that you hit him. In addition, it could compromise his legs, which in turn will reduce the sting in his shots.

1. Wrestling heavy: As we have seen in the past, Poirier struggles with quality wrestlers. If Gaethje wants to ensure the win this weekend, he has to go back to his roots. Gaethje is an all-American Division 1 wrestler. Therefore, he is no slouch. If he can use his wrestling, he can be sure to get the better of Dustin Poirier.

So there you have it. These are five things we think Justin Gaethje has to do to beat Dustin Poirier this weekend. Do you think we missed out on anything?
