Japan Open Highlights: PV Sindhu bowed out from the first round at the Japan Open 2023 on Wednesday, July 26.The Indian’s struggles continued as she suffered a 12-13, 13-21 defeat against Zhang Yi Man. Earlier in the day, Lakshya Sen prevailed against compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat in a thrilling first round encounter The World No.12 defeated Rajawat 21-15, 12-21, 24-22. Newly crowned No. 2 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also advanced to the second round. They defeated Indonesia’s Leo Carnando and Daniel Marthin 21-16, 11-21, 21-13.

Lakshya Sen vs Priyanshu Rajawat

Lakshya Sen faced a scare from Rajawat in the opening round at the Tokyo Open. However the World No.12 held his nerves and save two match points to clinch a nail-biting victory in three games in an hour and five minutes.

Lakshya Sen will next face Kanta Tsuneyama in the second round. The World No.12 had a dominant start to the game. He led throughout the first game and won it comfirtably 21-15.

In the second game, change of ends worked for Rajawat. He took an early 6-4 lead and with five points on the trot entered the interval with a seven-point advantage. Lakshya Sen could not even come close as Rajawat went on to seal the second game 21-12, taking the contest into the decider.

The final game swung like a pendulum. Rajawat began with a big 4-1 lead. However Lakshya Sen snatched the next five points on the trot. Trailing 7-9, Rajawat got hold of the momentum as he grabbed the next four points and entered the interval with a lead.

Rajawat continued to lead and had an 18-14 advantage. But Lakshya reduced the deficit and a neck-to-neck battle ensued. A net-errpr ar a crucial juncture from Rajawat allowed Lakshya to level the scores 19-19. Soon another error from the former helped Lakshya get to the matchpoint.

However he squandered the opportunity with couple of errors giving his opponent the matchpoint. Rajawat too squandered twice and successive net-errors from him helped Lakshya to finally seal the contest.

World No. 17 PV Sindhu’s poor run of form continued as she bowed out from the first round at the Japan Open 2023. She lost 21-12 and 21-13 to China’s Zhang Yiman in a round-of-32 clash.

Zhang Yi Man, ranked one place lower than Sindhu, looked in control throughout the contest and wrapped up the match in 32 minutes. This was SIndhu’s second successive first round defeat after she lost to Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu Po in the opening round at Korea Open last week.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty vs Leo Carnando/Daniel Marthin

Fresh after winning the Korea Open, World No.2 Indian the Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty found it hard to make their place in the next round. The Indian men’s doubles ace, clinched their career-best world number 2 rank recently, had to battle for three games against Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin. They managed to clinch the victory by 21-16, 11-21, 21-13.
