Mumbai City FC had a successful campaign and won the ISL Shield during the 2022–23 season, making it one to remember. Des Buckingham, the team’s head coach, has made it obvious that his team must adapt and change in order to build on the success the team observed last season.
“We don’t want to be the same as last season. But we need to adapt and we need to evolve and that’s the beauty of the approach that we’ve taken.” Buckingham stated in a recent media interaction in Mumbai.

Last season, Mumbai City FC won the Indian Super League (ISL) and waltzed to the League Winners’ Shield. They started 18 games unblemished, which is unmatched in ISL history. They played a fun and aggressive brand of football, winning the Shield. Additionally, they scored a league-high 54 goals throughout the league round. When asked if viewers might anticipate the same from Mumbai City FC as they did last year, Buckingam said that his team couldn’t adopt the same strategy.
“Last season was very successful for us for many reasons, and we were able to do what we did. We need to recognise what went well and we don’t want to throw it all out and change everything. We want to build on the success that we had.’ he added.
Mumbai’s achievements on the pitch aided their accomplishment of some amazing things. The club ultimately offered tactician Des Buckingham a contract for a lengthier stay at the club as a result.
This was graciously received by the Englishman. Since joining the team, Buckingham has gained popularity with the supporters. The level of football played by the Islanders has improved because of his concept and playing style.

However, a bright and carefully procured contingent was the first and most important step of Des’ success. With a squad so profound, and yeilding positive results its not quite a suprise that Des would not want to change anything about it. The young tactacian resonated to the thought and stated
” We’ve gone out and made sure that we secure the players that we have, our young players in particular, to long-term contracts. That’s where we’ve focused our time and attention to start with, to make sure we tie them down for now and for the future,” he exclaimed.
However, as inevitable as change is Mumbai City FC did part ways with former Captain Mourtada Fall and Ahmed Jahouh. While Yoell van Nieff, former Mohun Bagan Super Giant stalwart Tiri and Indian talented defender Akash Mishra made their way to the roster.
