Rahane’s return to the red ball after a long absence of 14 months has not been eventful. Owing to his tremendous heroics for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023 he returned to the Indian team for the WTC Finals. Against Australia, he was decent down the order for the World Test Championship and thereby extended his stay in the squad.
As a result, Rahul Dravid showed his trust in Rahane by promoting him to be the vice-captain of the India Test Team. After a disappointing outing in the first Test match, expectations were high for Rahane to stitch a big partnership with Virat Kohli after India lost three quick wickets in the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rohit Sharma.

Toward the end of session 2 of Day 1, Shannon Gabriel comfortably defeated Rahane with a wonderful delivery. A properly pitched ball saw Rahane unable to defend. The ball angled inwards took an inside edge and then went on to rattle the stumps. It was a pathetic sight for the veteran batter as he witness the stump cartwheel much to the delight of West Indies.
