MLS All-Star vs Arsenal Live: Club Friendlies LIVE – MLS vs ARS LIVE – Arsenal are back to play against the MLS All-star team for the first time since 2016. Mikel Arteta will face former Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney-led star-studded team in this match. The last time around, Arsenal got the better of the all-star team and won by a 1-2 margin. However, this time around, Arsenal have been denied a win both times in their last two pre-season friendlies. Whereas, the MLS All-Star side have two consecutive wins in their bag.

The first MLS All-star match goes back to as early as 1996 when it was started as a showdown between the eastern and western MLS sides. It has been a long time since then and the fixture has expanded to a great extent. Every year, they host teams from all around the world. This includes big European clubs, like Juventus, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and several Premier League clubs. Following a break in 2020 due to Covid, the side played twice against Liga MX All-stars and won both times.

They won the first meeting on penalties where Matt Turner who’s now an Arsenal goalkeeper, was named the most valuable player. They won the 2nd match last year by a 2-1 margin. This year around, Wayne Rooney has the chance to lead them to a third consecutive win. Rooney joined the MLS side DC United back in 2018 and was a participant himself back in the day. He is currently the DC United manager and will take a few days off from his club responsibilities to lead the All-star team.

Arsenal are flying to the United States to start their blockbuster matches against the MLS All-star team, Manchester United, and Barcelona. However, they are approaching on the back of two consecutive 1-1 draws. They first drew against the English second-division side Watford and then they drew against the German second-division side Nurnberg. The Gunners were hoping to replicate their 5-3 win from 2022 against the German side. They started well when Bukayo Saka provided them the lead with a 7th-minute goal.

However, it was also their error that saw them end the match with a draw. Midfielder Jorginho made a huge mistake as he passed the ball back into his own net under pressure in the 62nd minute. The Gunners did not find their way back into the match from there. They are still in search of their first pre-season win ahead of a season where they will try to rectify their mistakes of yesteryear. They will seek to hopefully win the Premier League and get ahead in other competitions.

MLS All-star Team News

  • Rooney’s All-star team has a total of 28 names taken from all MLS sides for this year’s match on Wednesday. Some of these players were chosen by Rooney, some by the fans, and mostly by the MLS commissioner Don Garber. However, to the fans dismay, their new inclusion, 7-time Ballon d’Or winner star boy Lionel Messi will not be a part of this match.
  • The World Cup winner Argentine was officially unveiled as an Inter Miami player on July 16th. However, as there will now be a break for the Leagues Cup, fans will have to wait a while for his MLS debut match. As a result, he also won’t be participatong in this match same as the former Arsenal man Carlos Vela. The player will not be getting the chance for a reunion with his former team.
  • Even without Messi or Vela, the team still has some recognisable names, like former Barcelona man Riqui Puig or former Liverpool man Christian Benteke, and more. They could be lined up in the starting XI along with another Argentine Thiago Almada, who is now the very first active MLS to have won the World Cup.

Arsenal Team News

  • While MLS star boy Lionel Messi is set to miss the match, Arsenal have taken their recent record £105 million signing Declan Rice to the United States. The former West Ham United captain could make his non-competitive debut for the Gunners along with another newcomer Jurrien Timber. Their fellow new arrival Kai Havertz has already made his debut against Nurnberg.
  • Leandro Trossard and Martin Odegaard returned from Germany with injuries. However, both have been included in the squad as the seriousness of their injuries are still unclear. Along with the duo, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Mohamed Elneny, Gabriel Martinelli, and Rob Holding have also been included in the squad as they are still recovering from their respective injuries.
  • The USA national team player Folarin Balogun has also made the cut as he has flown to his home for their upcoming blockbuster matches. However, Nicolas Pepe, Cedric Soares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Reiss Nelson have all been left behind at home. Thomas Partey and Emile Smith Rowe have also stayed behind, but they are expected to take late flights and join the team at some point this week prior to their other matches.
