All you need to know about BBL 2023 & WBBL 2023 overseas player draft

Find out all you need to know about the BBL 2023 and WBBL 2023 overseas player draft that will take place on September 3.

With the BBL 2023 (Big Bash League 2023) kicking off on December 7 and the WBBL 2023 (Women’s Big Bash League 2023) starting on October 19, CA (Cricket Australia) has announced the overseas draft for their marquee tournaments. However, this time teams will be going after overseas players on September 3 instead of privately recruiting them. This new development has left many wondering about how the new BBL and WBBL overseas player draft works. So, here is all you need to know about the BBL and WBBL overseas draft.

Draft Lottery to decide which team goes first

A draft lottery was held on Friday, July 14, to select the order in which teams will be bidding. The result of this lottery was announced earlier today, July 17, with the Melbourne Stars coming out on top while the Perth Scorchers found themselves last in the BBL.

How many players can a team select?

A team can select a minimum of two and a maximum of three players from the draft.

How is the draft decided?

Cricket Australia has used a weighted lottery system for the overseas draft. The three teams that were not part of last year’s BBL finals will get the chance to make the first three picks. The Melbourne Stars, who finished last, will go first, and the Adelaide Strikes and Hobart Hurricanes will follow suit. Similarly, the Perch Scorchers won, and so they go dead last, while the Renegades, Thunder, Sixers, and Heat are 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th, respectively.

The WBBL will also follow the same method as the BBL.

How does the draft work?

There will be a total of four rounds with each team having the chance to pick one player per round.

  • Round 1: Platinum Players only
  • Round 2: Platinum or Gold Players
  • Round 3: Gold or Silver Players
  • Round 4: Silver or Bronze Players

If a team doesn’t pick a platinum player, they must select a gold one. A team can select two platinum players with a stipulation that will not allow them to pick a gold player but only silver and bronze. Similarly, if a team picks two gold players, they can no longer pick a silver player.

Of the four rounds, rounds one, two, and four will see teams pick in the order from one to eight. However, the third round will reverse that order, giving the last couple of teams a slight advantage by picking two players in quick succession.
