The news came as a surprise because Alvarez had been set to face Jermall Charlo, the twin brother of Charlo, in the first of a three-fight contract with PBC. However, the larger Charlo, a middleweight champion, was unable to compete because of ongoing personal problems.

Why Is Canelo Alvarez Boxing Jermell Charlo and Not Jermall Charlo on September Under PBC

After satisfying his responsibilities with Matchroom Boxing, Canelo recently signed a multi-fight contract with PBC. Canelo would have continued to work with Eddie Hearn for at least one more bout, but the Matchroom boss claimed that the demands of both champions made a rematch with Dmitry Bivol impossible to pull together.

Many people salivated at the prospect of Canelo against heavyweights like Jermall Charlo and David Benavidez when the PBC contract was announced. Canelo was expected to face Jermall Charlo at the start of his PBC tour, but reality deviates greatly from expectations.

Jermell Charlo, the undisputed junior middleweight champion, will now face Alvarez. Alvarez has won a title at 175 pounds, but Charlo, 33, has never competed over 154 pounds. But Charlo will be 4 inches taller and have a 212-inch reach advantage.

Given that it would have coincided with Mexican Independence Day, the date made sense. The fight between Canelo and Charlo has officially been scheduled for September 30, and Jermell Charlo will be competing.

The reason for the change in the contenders of the fight has been said that Jermall Charlo is currently dealing with personal issues.
