Young Yashasvi Jaiswal had a dream start to his international career, but this is just the beginning. Jaiswal repaid selectors’ faith by slamming a magnificent knock against the West Indies in the 1st Test on Thursday, capping off an incredible rags-to-riches tale in his first-ever game for the Indian squad.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who used to peddle ‘panipuri’ for pocket money, was in tears when he reached out to his father following a memorable century. In the first game of the two-match series between Rohit Sharma-led side and the West Indies, Jaiswal became the 17th batsman in Indian history to register a century on their Test debut.
Jaiswal’s father stated to Hindustan Times that the India opener called him at around 4:30 AM during the Dominica Test.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was crying
“He called at around 4:30 am (IST) on Day 2 after making his century. He struggled to contain his tears. And I sobbed. It was an extremely emotional time. He struggled to speak for a while. He was worn out.”
Jaiswal’s father Bhupendra, who owns a small paint store in Bhadohi, further stated, “He just asked me, ‘Are you happy, father?'”
In his first game for the Asian giants, the 21-year-old became the third Indian batsman to achieve 150 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal was rewarded for his prolific domestic scoring streak as he and captain Rohit formed a critical 229-run partnership.
Rohit was really taken by the debutant’s demeanour. Jaiswal, an Indian southpaw, played an incredible knock of 171 off 387 balls in which he broke numerous records.
The India opener is the fifth-youngest batsman to hit a 150 on their Test cricket debut at the age of 21 years and 196 days.
He is the eighth Indian to score a century on their Test debut while playing abroad. The India opener also succeeded in surpassing Mohammad Azharuddin’s mark by becoming the Indian batter with the most balls faced on Test debut.
