Van der Sar played for the likes of Ajax, Juventus, Fulham and Manchester United in a 21-year career. At the conclusion of the previous season on May 31, Edwin van der Sar decided to step down from his position as director general of Ajax.

The reason behind his resignation was Ajax’s third-place finish in the Dutch league, which meant they would not participate in the upcoming Champions League. Van der Sar had been an important member of Ajax’s board since late 2012 and had served as director general since 2016. Despite having a contract until mid-2025, he opted to resign from his duties.
