India’s move to switch Shubman Gill to the middle order did not reap dividends in the IND vs WI 1st Test. Gill replacing Cheteshwar Pujara at No.3 had a nightmare outing with the bat at Windsor Park. On a day when Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a century, the Gujarat Titans star could only manage a single-digit score.

With Cheteshwar Pujara not in plans, India are hunting for a new No.3 in the new WTC cycle 2023-25. While Yashasvi was earmarked for the spot, it was Shubman Gill that the team management chose for the position. Gill as it turns out, himself requested a change in position. Jaiswal was moved to the top and stroked a stunning hundred, but the move did not play well for Gill.
In his short 11-ball stay at the crease, Shubman looked fidgety at best. He was troubled by the turn on offer as Jomel Warrican and Alick Athanaze tightened their lines. The former soon had his reward as Gill edged to slip for just 6. On a pitch where both openers got tons, the 23-year-old will be disappointed with his show.
Now with Jaiswal all but sealing his place, Gill will have to chin up and get runs under his belt. It is unlikely India bat second in Dominica, which leaves him with one more Test before the South Africa series. He will be keen to stamp his authority on the drop-down spot after a poor show in Dominica.
