Fans slam Wimbledon Curfew as Djokovic’s 4th round clash suspended

Wimbledon Curfew: The curfew rule that is in place at the Wimbledon is continuing to receive backlash from the fans. The fourth round clash between Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz was suspended on Sunday due to the curfew. Djokovic won the first two sets and was leading 7-6, 7-6. The tournament this year has been hit with a number of disruptions due to inclement weather. Earlier this week, the second round clash between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andy Murray was suspended due to the curfew. Since then Tennis fans have been slamming the Wimbledon tradition.

What is the Wimbledon curfew?

According to the Wimbledon tournament rules, all the matches must stop at 11 PM local time. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event that has this rule in place. Usually night matches in any other Grand Slam tournament go deep into the night and finish in the wee hours.

This curfew rule at Wimbledon has been in place Since 2009, the year when the centre court got the roof installed. Installation of the roof allowed the matches to continue into the night. But the curfew rule was also implemented.

Several fans were left frustrated and disappointed after the curfew haled the play between Djokovic and Hurkacz. The World No.2 won the first two sets and was one set away from advancing to the quarterfinals. However he has to comeback on Monday to resume action.

Fans slammed the scheduling of the tournament. They questioned the curfew rule when play at the centre court starts as late at 1.30 PM local time.

Let me see if I have this straight on Wimbledon scheduling that keeps running into that 11 pm curfew: They can't play too late, but they can't start matches earlier on Centre Court?

Dear @Wimbledon the 11pm curfew is frankly ridicoulously out of date. Matches cannot end at 3am, yet at least at midnight.
Also, those who need to resume playing should start 1st and not as a 2nd game like Djoko-Hurkacz today.

Why does #Wimbledon still have that ridiculous curfew in place if matches on Centre Court start at 1:30pm?? Thats ridiculous! How about keep your curfew and let matches start at 11am or 12pm? Honestly, its NOT rocket science. @Wimbledon fix this.

I had plans to enjoy Novak and Hurkacz match until the end last night but here we are… Defending champion forced to play last and unable to finish his match due to curfew.
