UFC 290: Here’s why Robert Whittaker Taps on His Chest Tattoo Before Every Fight
As Robert Whittaker makes his way into the Octagon, he always taps his chest, a gesture that many interpret as him tapping his Southern Cross tattoo. While Whittaker doesn’t mind this interpretation, there is a much deeper reason behind this ritual, which he recently shared in an interview with The Fatherhood.
During the chat with The Fatherhood Whittaker stated, “My father got me that tattoo when I was 18. And I always tap my chest to show that whether he’s in the crowd or in the stands or at home, it’s a way for him to know that I’m thinking of him. It’s my way to show him that I know he’s watching.”
The reason behind Whittaker’s pre-fight ritual was not only heartwarming but also largely unknown, leaving both fans and UFC commentator Jon Anik speechless upon hearing it.
Tattoos have been a popular form of self-expression for athletes across various sports, with the likes of Conor McGregor, David Beckham, and Brock Lesnar all sporting their own unique inkings. Each one has a special significance, such as Lesnar’s sword tattoo on his chest, which symbolizes his lowest point where he felt like the sword was at his neck.
It’s no surprise that athletes have their own reasons for getting tattoos. However, it’s heartwarming to know that for Whittaker, his tattoo and pre-fight ritual hold a special place in his heart as a tribute to his father. And now when he will do this before his upcoming fight against DuPlessis we will know the reason behind that and his father must be very proud seeing him in the octagon.
