Virat Kohli succession plan begins in IND vs WI Tests, Shubman Gill likely at No 3

As Indian Cricket Team continue their hunt for the Next Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill is likely to bat at Number 3 with either of Gaikwad or Jaiswal opening

The Indian Cricket Team have now turned their attention to look for the next player that will replace Virat Kohli. Who can it be? Starting from the upcoming IND vs WI Test Series, the opening pair is going to see a change with Shubman Gill moving down the order. This is mainly because the selectors believe that Gill can be the successor to Kohli and fill in at the number 3 squad.

Though it will be a bold move to start with, but Virat Kohli is not getting any younger. Currently, 34, Kohli with his incredible fitness has 2-3 years more in him to perform at the very top level. But, backups are necessary and proper grooming is needed for the youngsters to take over the senior players.

As for Shubman Gill aka the Baby GOAT, the 23-year-old has consolidated his spot in the Indian team across all formats of the game with his consistent batting performances. He has formed a formidable partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma over the years and is one of the first names to be included in the squad.

But the question remains, who will open if Shubman Gill moves down to Number 3? Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal will fight against each other to compete for the opening spot. On the other hand, with Chesteshwar Pujara missing, Gill will take his spot while Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane will bat at 4 and 5 respectively.

It will be a good opportunity for Indian Team and Rahul Dravid to try out these experiments against West Indies. A rather easy tour in comparison to others, India will opt for quite a few changes as they also plan to rest quite a few players which is commonly known as Workload Management.

Apart from this plausible change, there are unlikely to be any more changes in the Indian squad. The Ishan Kishan vs KS Bharat debate will be settled after India’s warmup game. Furthermore, depending on the pitch at Dominica, a choice will be made between Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur.
