Hardik Pandya to lead in ODIs after WC? Ex-India coach gives Bombastic response

Ravi Shastri says Rohit Sharma will be captain during the 50-over World Cup in 2023. The former India coach has tipped Hardik Pandya to lead in white-ball formats after the showpiece event

Hardik Pandya: The ODI World Cup 2023 is still four months away, but Ravi Shastri is thinking about Rohit Sharma’s successor after the showpiece event. The former India coach is impressed with Hardik Pandya’s leadership skills and feels he should lead the team after the ODI World Cup is over. Hardik is tipped to take the captaincy from the MI skipper in the T20 format, but Shastri opines the GT skipper should also be given 50 over reins after the global event.

“After the World Cup, I feel he should take over captaincy in white-ball cricket. Rohit should lead India in the World Cup, no question there,” Shastri said to The Week.

Hardik Pandya: Right time for Hardik Pandya to take over white-ball captaincy from Rohit – Ravi Shastri

For the unversed, Rohit Sharma’s leadership has come under the scanner ever since he failed to win two ICC events. India lost the T20 World Cup semi-final match to England and WTC Final to Australia. In all probability, the 50-Over World Cup in 2023 will be the last ICC event Rohit will be in charge of the team.

Speaking about Hardik he has impressed with his leadership skills during IPL as well during his brief stint as T20 captain.

Hardik is the designated white-bal vice captain of team India and is the worthy contender to lead India in the white-ball formats once Rohit Sharma steps down from the leadership. While the BCCI have announced squads for the ODI and Test series, it has yet to announce squad for the T20 series. Hardik is set to lead during the five-match T20 series against Windies.

While nothing is confirmed yet, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, and Siraj are likely to be not part of the T20 series.
