Mercedes F1 Honcho Toto Wolff Veils Bold Statement on Red Bull Comparison While Announcing British GP Upgrades

Mercedes currently stands 2nd in the constructors' standings, closely ahead of Aston Martin.

Mercedes F1 team Toto Wolff has announced a “larger” upgrade package for the 2023 British GP at Silverstone. Since the team first introduced the upgrades and modified car concept in Monaco, Silver Arrows have made significant strides toward the front. A 4-5 finish in Monaco was followed by a double podium finish in Spain and a podium finish for Lewis Hamilton in Canada.

Moreover, the battle for second between Hamilton and old rival Fernando Alonso gave the fans glimpses of their golden days. Another matter of boost for the Brackley-based team is the fact the performance in Montreal wasn’t an expected one, primarily owing to W-14’s limited performance with the slow-speed corners. Now, carrying that boost, the team has decided to bring in further changes over the next few races.

Mercedes currently stands 2nd in the constructors’ standings, closely ahead of Aston Martin. However, the gap to Red Bull is still beyond achievable at this point, even after three back-to-back average weekends for Sergio Perez. Recently while talking to Motorsport.com, Wolff discussed the gap that exists between Mercedes and former rival Red Bull and how far they are to catching up with them.

“Encouraging to be not so far away”: Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff

As a part of their first major overhaul, Silver Arrows debuted a new floor, front suspension, and side pods in Monaco. Thereafter, they made further addition of a new diffuser at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya which worked for Hamilton in Spanish GP. Now, the team boss has announced a major upgrade package for the home race of the Mercedes duo.

“We’re bringing a larger one to Silverstone. Then we should have another one before shutdown. It’s just that the learnings have accelerated a lot since we changed some of the conceptual architecture. There should be decent steps coming in the next four races,” said Wolff.

While discussing the current gap of the team with the championship leaders Red Bull, he had a rather pragmatic yet hopeful response. “It’s encouraging to be not so far away. But one must not forget that Max is cruising in the front. I don’t think he’s completely cruising, but he is still having an easier time in the front. I think there is margin, so there’s quite a gap to catch up.”
