Zaka Ashraf: After Najam Sethi, Zaka Ashraf is set to take charge as the new Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. Sethi has withdrawn from the race to be the PCB chairman for yet another term citing political differences between the ruling main parties over the appointment. In a late-night Tweet, Sethi confirmed his exit.
“I don’t want to be a bone of contention between Asif Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif,” Sethi tweeted. “Such instability and uncertainty is not good for PCB. Under the circumstances, I am not a candidate for Chairmanship of PCB. Good luck to all stakeholders.”
Speaking about Ashraf, he and Sethi have a strong history of vying for PCB posts since the duo were also engaged in a prolonged legal battle during 2013 and 2014. According to reports, there were differences between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the PPP over the appointment of PCB chairman. While Sethi edged Ashraf in 2022, he failed to do so in 2023
Pakistan Federal Minister Ehsan Mazari confirmed Ashraf’s appointment as the next PCB chairman. Mazari also said that Sethi was appointed for only four months to conduct elections for PCB chairman post and reinstate the 2014 constitution at the request of PCB patron and PM Shehbaz Sharif. According to sources, the senior leadership of the party wants Ashraf, who presided over the PCB during the last PPP administration, to do so once more.
Zaka Ashraf: Ashraf to return as PCB chairman after nine years
After nine years, Ashraf will return as the PCB chairman. In the legal dispute in 2013-14, Nawaz Sharif – Shehbaz’s elder brother won the race and brought in Sethi as PCB chairman. But the tide has changed in 2023 with Seti forced to make way for Ashraf. The immediate task for the new PCB chairman is the issue involving Pakistan’s participation in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 set to be hosted in India.
